Taking as the jumping off point an English folklore superstition that tells us that broad beans grown in a leap year “grow the wrong way”, it has been my intention to grow leap year beans and keep them for generations to come. In undertaking this I plan to learn from my grandfather who has been growing beans for over 30 years, and hopefully keep the bean lineage alive. I’ve planted two different types of broad beans, “Superifin” and “Masterpiece Green Longpods” that I have propogated and transplanted and have now been grown in my grandfather’s vegetable plot. I am planning on saving beans from this years crop in order to share seeds and recreate a leap year in some bean form every year.
